Before you start

Before we start the training we should make sure that the cadet understands where and how to get an ambulance and how to store an ambulance.

Once the ambulance is out, ensure they are familiar with all the controls for lights, sirens, Setting the Call sign on the roof (T /csign)

This would also be a good time to ensure they understand the driving standards we expect and the exemptions while driving the ambulance under emergency conditions:

  • Exceed statutory speed limits

  • Treat Red lights and pedestrian crossings as “Give Way”

  • Park in no parking zones, clearways and other areas when you would not be permitted to stop/park.

  • Leave your engine running while stopped

  • Passing on the incorrect side of Keep Left/Right signs

  • Using the opposite lane of travel if safe to do so

You are not exempt from

  • Dangerous driving

  • Dangerous parking

  • Refusing to stop after being involved in a Road Traffic Collision

  • Failing to adhere to a “One Way”, “No Entry” or “Stop” sign

  • Failing to adhere to LSPD instructions

Place the first map marker just outside Zancudo, we want to go to the housing area circled in blue (see map below), however, marking that on the GPS takes you up an inaccessible dirt path.

Part of the first drive from SFH to Zancudo should under normal driving conditions, the cadet should obey all traffic lights and speed limits during this time. Let the cadet know that the ambulance is a slower and more cumbersome vehicle than most, and it is designed to get to the scene of an incident safely.

When you feel like they are ready, you can ask them to continue to point 1 under emergency conditions.

NOTE: There are interim markers that you will need to select and then change to point 2 or 3. This is to ensure that the correct roads are taken for the assessment.
